Both Registered Social Workers (RSWs) and Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) are qualified mental health professionals who provide counselling and psychotherapy services.
The primary difference lies in their education, professional training, and regulatory bodies. Social workers are trained to understand not only individual mental health concerns, but also the broader social, family, cultural, and systemic factors that influence wellbeing. This includes understanding how relationships, family dynamics, healthcare systems, schools, workplaces, and life circumstances impact mental health.
Registered Social Workers in British Columbia are regulated by the BC College of Social Workers under provincial legislation. This regulatory framework establishes standards of practice, ethical requirements, continuing competency expectations, and a formal public accountability process. Registered Clinical Counsellors are regulated through their own professional association and standards.
As a Registered Social Worker with both a Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work degree, and over 13 years of experience in healthcare, community mental health, child protection, and crisis services, I bring both clinical expertise and a systems-based perspective to my work. This allows me to help clients understand not only what they are experiencing, but also the broader context in which those challenges occur.

Many extended health benefit plans cover counselling services provided by a Registered Social Worker (RSW). Coverage varies between providers, so I recommend checking with your insurance company regarding your specific plan. Counselling services provided by an RSW may also qualify as an eligible medical expense for income tax purposes. Receipts are provided for reimbursement and tax claims.

That's okay. Many people come to counselling with a general sense that something isn't working but aren't sure exactly what they need. Part of our work together is identifying what's contributing to your struggles and developing a path forward.

My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and direct. I draw from evidence-based modalities including CBT, DBT, EMDR, Narrative Therapy, Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), and mindfulness-based approaches. I tailor therapy to each client's needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

A limited number of reduced-fee spaces may be available for individuals experiencing financial barriers to accessing counselling. Sliding scale spots are offered based on availability and individual circumstances. If cost is a concern, please feel free to reach out to discuss your situation and determine whether a reduced fee may be available.

I bring over 13 years of experience working in mental health, child and family services, and the public healthcare system. My style is warm, genuine, and relational, but also active and practical. I don't believe therapy is just about talking through problems—it's about understanding patterns, developing new skills, and creating meaningful change that extends beyond the therapy room.
